NEET stands for National Eligibility Entrance Test which is aimed at selecting the students for the seats in medical colleges spread over the country. It was conducted for the first time in 2013. The idea was to curb the malpractices being practised by the private medical colleges. It was alleged that these colleges sell seats for exorbitant price and, so there was a need to regulate the entry of students to these colleges. The initiative, however, hit a legal hurdle when the Supreme Court scrapped NEET on the petition filed by the private medical colleges. For two years, different state medical boards conducted their own entrance exams for their respective medical colleges.
NEET issue started hitting the headlines again when the Supreme Court reversed its earlier order and allowed holding NEET from this year itself. It is a welcome step for stopping the irregularities found in the admission of private medical colleges. But it has created the problems for the students preparing for the state level medical entrance exams. They had been notified by the respective state boards to prepare for the state exam only. But the recent order of the Supreme Court has caused uncertainty and confusion among the students. Their difficulty is increased by the fact that the syllabi for these two entrance exams are different. NEET covers both 11th and 12th syllabus but state board needs the preparation of only 12th syllabus. So, the students are in dilemma. Any way someone who has thoroughly prepared the syllabus should not find it difficult to clear both. All the best to the students appearing for their forthcoming entrance exams.
