Auspicious is the first Sunday of every August. The reason is that it is dedicated to one of the most important part of one’s relation called friendship. According to one belief, the friendship day started in Uruguay, a South American country in 1958. Initially, it was a commercial event promoted by the greeting cards company, but later the interest of people made it a grand success. Its popularity can be understood from the fact that the United Nations (UN) has recognized and approved it. Perhaps, the UN wants the warring countries to forget their enmity and extend their hands of friendship.
Different countries celebrate friendship on different days. In India, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month of August. So this year, 7th Aug became the friendship day for all Indians. Though friendship can be expressed on any day, this day has assumes significance due to interest of youngsters and network of social media. It is but natural that the people are flooded with the friendship messages on Facebook and WhatsApp. This is also the day where friends turned foes can cease to be foes and become friends again forever. As the time passed, the greeting cards have been replaced by the friendship bands that adorn the hands of the friends.
Leaving its commercial value, the value of this day in the heart of friends is more important. If friendship is to be made public, let’s not wait for a special day. Let every day be the friendship day to make new friends and nurture the friendship of existing ones.
