Prevention is better than cure. This is the age old saying describing the importance of taking preventive steps to avoid a visit to the doctor. It is saddening to see that despite rise in number of hospitals and doctors, it is a common sight to see the long queue of the patients waiting for their turn to consult a doctor. Even in private clinics, people have to sit for a considerable time for their turn to come. In government hospitals, the situation is miserable.

Now the question arises, is it possible to stay healthy without doctors and medicine? The answer lies in our scriptures that tell us that by maintaining a balance with nature, we can increase our longevity. In fact, the sages of bygone era used to live for hundreds of years without any medical intervention. Their whole lifestyle was influenced and inspired by nature. Their diet was natural, surroundings were fresh, their clothing and shelter also came from nature. But, with the scientific advancements, things have changed. So-called better world is infected with the germs and microbes of different kinds. The medicines in the form of chemicals can cure one disease but causes other side effects. So, they fail to provide permanent relief.

Though we can’t change the surrounding around us, but can change our life style to facilitate a healthy life. The most important thing is the change in lifestyle. The food that we eat should be carefully chosen as it empowers the body against all infection. A balanced diet can bring the fifty percent success. Proper sleep, a well-devised daily routine can surely help one to reduce the number of visits to a doctor. Physical exercises like Yoga can also fortify the body against any attack of a germ.
