Our country has given many unique gifts to the world. Yoga is one of them. Many believe that Yoga is only the body exercise aimed at physical fitness. But body is just one aspect of this great Indian art. Yoga offers much more than that. It purifies the mind and keeps it healthy. In other words, Yoga brings harmony between mind and body. Yoga believes that mental fitness is as important as the physical fitness. Only when mind works properly, body can do the right job. While doing different ‘asanas’, flexibility of body and mental calmness are focused.
The history of Yoga dates back to the olden days in India when Saints and Sages used to practice Yoga to keep their body in tune and mind in healthy state. No wonder they used to live for hundred years without aid of any medical help. On the contrary, now we see people struggling to even touch the age of eighty despite having all medical support. Gradually, people across the world have come to realise the importance of yoga and are adopting it to stay and healthy life. Yoga not only facilitates good health but also cures many ailments. Many people have successfully been treated of fatal diseases. This has boosted the confidence of people in yoga.
With time, Yoga has spread its wings across the world. We find yoga camps running in the western world that is considered much advanced in the field of science and technology. Now a new chapter is going to be added with United Nation deciding to celebrate 21st June as the International day of Yoga. This followed the address of our prime minister in the UN general assembly where he enlightened the world leaders about the benefits of Yoga. He said “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfillment and harmony between man and nature”. 21st June has been chosen because it is the longest day in the northern hemisphere. So, feel proud to be the practitioner of yoga irrespective of any background.
