As the name itself suggests, pronouns are the words that are used at the place of noun. In some cases, instead of using name, we always use pronoun. For example when we talk about ourselves, we do not tell our names. We always use ‘I’. Similarly when we address some one before us, we say ‘You’ and not the person’s name. Let’s take few examples
I go for a walk every morning.
Here ‘I’ is the pronoun.
Similarly
You have come to work late today.
Here ‘You’ is the pronoun.
Likewise, when we address a third person, we use name only in the beginning and later we use the pronoun ‘he’ and ‘she’ as the case may be. Here is an example.
Sita is an intelligent girl. She studies well. She is also good at sports. She tops in her class.
As we can see above, the noun’ Sita’ has been used in the beginning of the sentence. Subsequently, the pronouns ‘she’ has been used.
The pronoun ‘It’ is used for lifeless things or in the case of neutral gender. For instance,
Mumbai is a Metropolitan city. It is also called the commercial capital of India. It has many tall buildings. It is inhabited by more than a crore people.
All the pronouns above which replace the persons, places etc are called Personal Pronouns.
