When we talk about the object, it is nothing but the part of the sentence on which the action is done. For example,
Shyam eats an apple a day.
Here Shyam is the subject, eat is the verb and apple is the object.
Sometimes, we have more than one object in the sentence. For example
Shyam offers his brother an apple.
In the above sentence we have two objects-‘ his brother’ and ‘an apple’
The first object ‘his brother’ is the indirect object- Whom part.
The second object ‘an apple’ is the direct object- What part.
The above statements can also be written as
Shyam offers an apple to his brother.
A change can be seen in the latter sentence. It is the use of preposition ‘to’ after the direct object. In other words, if direct object comes first, we have to use the preposition. Let’s take another example in both the forms.
Mr Sharma taught us English. (Indirect object first and direct one next)
Mr Sharma taught English to us. (Direct object first and indirect one next)
