Walking is the habit being sacrificed due to love for vehicles. There were times when people used to walk for miles to reach their destination. Of course, it took more time and efforts to travel the journey but there was an advantage also and that is regular exercise. Walking is considered as one of the most essential exercise to stay fit. Ever since the people have got the option of using motor driven vehicle, they seem to have completely abandoned the habit of walking. In fact, the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi walked for hundreds of kilometer during Dandi March to break the salt rule. Though he had the option of choosing the motor vehicle, he preferred walking to show the British Empire that he and the whole country had the strength to reach the destination on foot and break the salt rule.
As time passed, there have been advancement in technology and very soon the streets got flooded with the vehicles of different types. Despite having advantages of saving time and efforts, the biggest disadvantage of vehicular journey is the dependence on the vehicles. The people who have got used to vehicle- aided travelling can’t walk for even half a kilometer. Another demerit is that all the vehicles run on fossil fuels like petrol and diesel, which are limited. Tomorrow, if these fuels get exhausted, it would be extremely difficult for the people to adjust to the new atmosphere. From environment point of view also, the vehicles smoke is harmful, causing different types of pollution. In short, if we walk as much as possible, we can avoid dependence, future inconvenience and ever increasing pollution.
